Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell to the Western Mustangs 5-2 on Friday evening (Oct. 31) at Thompson Arena.
Matt Marantz opened the scoring for the Mustangs at 6:41 into the game, with Alex Micallef and Shaun Furlong notching the assists. The Blues responded 10 minutes later when team captain Andrew Doyle beat Western netminder Greg Dodds to even the score; however, the Mustangs notched two more in the first period to take a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.Â
Western scored the second period's only goal on the powerplay when Noah Schwartz and De Coste set up Julian Cimadamore.
The Mustangs powerplay would strike again in the third period, and put them up 5-1 after Luke Karaim's shot hit the back of the net. Toronto would score one more when Tyler Liukkonen converted a Paul Van De Velde pass, but that would be as close as they would come. Western went 3-for-3 on the man advantage and would take the game 5-2.
Toronto goaltender Michael Nishi had 33 saves for the Blues, while Dodds came up with 36 in the win for the Mustangs.
The Varsity Blues head to Waterloo next weekend to face the Warriors next Friday, November 7. The Blues beat the Warriors 4-1 in their first meeting of the season on October 24.
