WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYOFF PREVIEW: BLUES VS VOYAGEURS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team hosts the Laurentian Voyageurs in OUA playoff action this Wednesday, October 22 at Varsity Centre at 6 p.m.

The game is free and open to the public, and will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.

The Blues finished the regular season in third place with a 10-4-2 record, while the Voyageurs were 6-8-2 in sixth place in the OUA East division. It marks the 15th straight post season appearance for U of T.

"We consider our league season successful by finishing third based on the quality of opposition," said Varsity Blues head coach Stuart Neely. "Including ourselves, anyone can be beaten on any given day but you must congratulate UOIT and Ottawa for fantastic seasons. Those league seasons are over now and we must be focused on each game as it comes."

Should U of T win Wednesday night, they would travel to take on the second-place UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday, October 26 in Oshawa.

Toronto and Laurentian have fresh memories of each other, having wrapped up the regular season versus each other on Sunday. Blues veteran Olivia Gonsalves scored in the 81st minute to give Toronto a 1-0 win over Laurentian.

Toronto is a perfect 2-0 in playoff history with the Voyageurs, having beat Laurentian for the provincial bronze medal in 2004 and again in the first round in 2006. Laurentian's last win over the Blues came on on Oct. 15, 2005 in regular season play.

Second-year midfielders Nicki Parkes and Claudia Piazza led the Blues with four and seven goals, respectively, while rookies Zoe Carty and Alexandra Rigby each notched three goals during conference play.

Fourth-year goalkeeper Sara Petrucci played in all 16 games, earning eight shut outs this season.

Laurentian is led by striker Sarah Sanford, who tallied five goals, with Amy Fitzgerald and Amanda Kwan each scoring three this year.

"We know this match will be a hard fought contest and are looking forward to representing our University with the same pride, passion and persistence we displayed throughout the year," added Neely. "While our goal of qualifying for the playoffs is secured, our season is not complete. We simply want more."
