MEN'S HOCKEY FALLS TO LANCERS IN WINDSOR

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 10-3 to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, October 18 in Windsor, Ontario.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 1-3-0 in early OUA West division action.

The Varsity Blues had a great chance early when a turnover at the Lancers blue line gave Paul Van De Velde a clear shot on net, but the puck sailed just wide. After Erik Noel's goal was waved off due to a high stick, Windsor took the lead when Daulton Siwack sent a bouncing puck past Toronto's fourth-year netminder Brett Willows.

The Lancers struck again when a rush from Dylan Seguin created space for defender Scott Prier to jump into the play and connect on the pass, burying it into the Blues net. Windsor continued to press, and a tick-tack-toe play from Dylan Denomme, Drew Palmer, and Chad Shepley put the Lancers up 3-0 midway through the first period.

Lane Werbowski had a great power play chance, but the quick glove of goalie Matt Murphy robbed him of the goal.

Having killed two penalties, Windsor's Spencer Pommells added another goal, converting a Matt Beaudoin pass from the point, giving Windsor a 4-0 lead.

The Lancers notched a power play goal late in the first frame and led 5-0 after the first 20 minutes.

U of T had several early power play chances in the second period, but Werbowski's point shot, and Van De Velde's high slot wrister weren't enough to beat Murphy.

The Varsity Blues would finally break Murphy's shutout bid when Michael Markovic received a pass from Corey Jackson and buried the puck on the doorstep of the crease. The Lancers got that back on the ensuing power play when Prier netted his second of the game off a one-timer from the point.

Garrett Sheehan came up big in the Blues penalty kill, making back-to-back saves, and dispersing some of the Lancers pressure. After killing the remainder of a five-minute penalty, Tyler Liukkonen found himself on a three-on-two with Christian Finch and Patrick Marsh. Liukkonen beat his defender with some intricate stick handling and fired the puck past Murphy.

Windsor led the Blues 7-2 after forty minutes of action.

The third period opened with a Blues power play goal when Marcus Yolevski fired in a point shot to get the Blues to 7-3 but that would be as close at it got on this night.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice on Friday, October 24 when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.
