Box Score Tyler von Engelbrechten notched two goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night (Jan. 9) in Waterloo, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 10-7-2 and move into a three-way tie for third in the OUA West standings.
Von Engelbrechten (Markham) opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the game with a goal assisted by Blues top point-getter Michael Markovic and sophomore Andrew Doyle.
Markovic and von Engelbrechten connected again less than two minutes into the second period on the man advantage and Toronto held the 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.
Laurier's Greg Cerilli scored 45 seconds into the third to bring the game within one, but the Blues responded with another powerplay marker, this time off the stick of Tyler Liukkonen, 8:33 into the frame.
The Hawks added another late, but the Blues held strong, successfully killing 31 seconds of 6-on-5 to secure the victory.
Third-year goaltender Brett Willows (Rivers, Man.) posted 28 saves in his sixth win of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice this Sunday, January 12 as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
