Box Score Five players hit double digits as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 77-45 on Saturday night (Jan. 25) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the win, the Blues improve to 8-8 and remain in fourth place in the OUA East division.

Fourth-year guard Jill Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) led all players with 19 points, while adding five boards, three assists and two steals. Rachael Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) notched 14 points and six rebounds, while Liane Bailey of Montreal had 10 points, seven assists, six boards and four steals on the night.

Fifth-year veteran Vanessa Brathwaite recorded 10 points and six steals, while Kristy Chute added 10 points and five boards in the win.

Bailey got the Blues off to a solid start with back-to-back jumpers. The Voyaguers bounced back but six points from Chute gave U of T a 16-9 lead after the first quarter.

The Blues kept on rolling in the second quarter, opening the frame on a 16-4 run and Stratton took over from there, notching 13 points, including three three-pointers to give the Blues a dominant 44-17 lead at halftime.

Sider opened the second half with a big three and added another late in the frame as Toronto carried a 32-point lead into the fourth (60-28). Laurentian attempted to rally in the fourth, but to no avail as Toronto secured their third win in four games.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, January 31 as they host the Carleton Ravens at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
