Box Score Second-year forward Taylor Day scored one goal and added another in the shoot out to help the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a big 3-2 shoot out win over the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night (Jan. 18) in Waterloo.
The win marks Toronto's first over Laurier since Nov. 26, 2006 and improves the Blues record to 13-4-1, just one point behind the third-place Guelph Gryphons and two behind the Queen's Gaels. Laurier drops to 14-2-3 and still sits first in the standings.
"We had great goaltending once again," said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. "We did the little things right tonight. Our forecheck was good and we got more shots. All in all it was a great win for our program as we approach the post season."
Day (Ilderton, Ont.) opened the scoring 4:59 into the first period with a wrap-around goal assisted by linemates Sonja Weidenfelder and Kelly O'Hanlon. The Hawks evened the score midway through the second period with a goal off the stick of Devon Skeats, but Toronto's Ragan Danford answered back with a hard drive to the net to notch her first goal of the season and give U of T a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
Laurier spoiled the regulation win 7:25 into the third when Dollee Meigs found a way past Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris. Both teams registered just one shot in the overtime period, with neither able to find the back of the net.
Day stepped up and opened the shoot out with her second goal of the game on a nifty deke to the right side of the net. After Kesteris stopped Laurier's Dekon Skeats, O'Hanlon put the Blues up by two with the same move as Day. Kesteris secured the win with a big stop on Hawks forward Robyn Degagne.
Kesteris posted 31 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Warriors in Waterloo. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
