The University of Toronto Varsity Blues hockey teams hit the road this weekend (Jan. 17-19) as they head to Waterloo to take on the Warriors. The women start the weekend with a big match-up versus the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks.
Toronto's men take on the ninth-place Warriors (8-8-2) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live, with links available at varsityblues.ca.
The Blues are 11-7-2 and sit tied for third in the OUA West division after defeating the Windsor Lancers 4-3 this past Sunday.
Fourth-year forward Michael Markovic (Toronto) leads the team and ranks 13th in the OUA with 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points. Teammate Tyler von Engelbrechten has also been making an impact for the Blues. The Markham, Ont., native notched two goals against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night, giving him a season tally of eight goals.
Second-year forward and Clarkson University transfer Christian Finch (Markham, Ont.) made an immediate impact, notching the game-winner over Windsor in his debut as a Varsity Blue on Sunday.
Netminder Brett Willows heads into the weekend after a stellar 52-save weekend against the Golden Hawks and the Lancers. Willows ranks 10th in the OUA with a .920 save percentage.
The Warriors are led by Chris Chappell who has netted 17 goals and added 11 assists this season. In net for the Warriors are Mike Morrison and Justin Leclerc, who have been splitting time between the pipes. The two goalies have .893 and .901 save percentages, respectively. Â
The Blues defeated the Warriors, 8-2, in their first meeting this season on Oct. 2.
Toronto's women take on the Golden Hawks on Saturday (Jan. 18) at 7:30 p.m., before battling the Warriors Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Toronto improved to 12-4-1 after splitting games this past weekend with York and Ryerson. Second-year forward Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) leads the Blues and ranks 10th in the OUA with eight goals and seven assists.
Courtney Brind-Amour-McClure (Waterdown, Ont.) has also been solid in the Toronto front line netting seven goals and seven assists, while team captain Kelly O'Hanlon leads the team in points with 18 having notched three goals and 15 assists.
Fourth-year netminder Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) attained her fifth shutout of the season with the Blues 2-0 win over the Rams. Kesteris ranks first in the OUA and second in the CIS with a .951 save percentage and five shut outs. Â
The Golden Hawks are led by Tammy Freiburger who has netted 10 goals and six assists this season. Amanda Smith has been between the pipes for Laurier and holds a .935 save percentage. Toronto was defeated 3-0 by the Golden Hawks in their last match up on Oct. 17, 2013.
Carolyn Burke leads the Warriors attack having tallied seven goals while goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis holds .915 save percentage. The Blues defeated the Warriors 4-0 at home on Oct. 11.
