GEE-GEES EDGE BLUES IN SHOOT OUT

Box Score Second-year forward Tyler Luikkonen scored two goals in a 4-3 shoot out loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night (Feb. 8) at Sports Complex Arena.

Toronto’s seventh-straight loss drops them to 12-9-6 as they remain in sixth place in the East division. The Gee-Gees improve to 15-8-4 and sit in fourth.

Luikkonen notched two powerplay goals, and also scored U of T’s lone tally in the shoot out. Jeff Brown and Tim Halloran each had two assists in the loss.

After Ottawa opened the scoring five minutes in, Luikkonen (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) evened the score on Toronto’s first powerplay opportunity of the game.

The Gee-Gees took a quick two-goal lead in the first seven minutes of the second frame, but veteran forward Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) was able to bring the game within one (3-2) heading into the third period.

Luikkonen scored his second goal of the game 4:46 into the third to even the game and veteran Cassidy Preston gave U of T the lead with less than 10 minutes to go.

Ottawa stormed back and tied it up with 32 seconds remaining to force overtime. After the extra time solved nothing, it took four shooters each to decide the winner, with Gee-Gees captain Luc-Olivier Blain notching the game-winner.

The Varsity Blues look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon (Feb. 9) as they wrap up the regular season at Concordia. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
