BLUES PLAYOFF RUN HAULTED IN DOUBLE OT

Box Score Luc Olivier Blain notched two goals, including the double-overtime winner, as the Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Varsity Blues 3-2 in Game 3 of the OUA East men’s hockey quarter-final series on Saturday night (Feb. 16).

It was the second time that overtime was needed in the three-game series. Ottawa took Game 1, 3-2 in overtime, on Wednesday night in Toronto, before U of T bounced back with a 4-0 shut out last night in Ottawa.

Blain notched the game-winner just 1:07 into the second overtime period, wrapping the puck around the net to beat Blues netminder Brett Willows (Rivers, Man.). Willows was stellar in net, posting 32 saves in the loss.

The Gee-Gees came out ready and raring to go, as Blain opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the contest.

Second-year forward and Blues leading scorer Jeff Brown (Toronto) finally got the Blues on the board midway through the second frame on a goal assisted by Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.).

The Blues notched the go-ahead goal 7:08 into the third period off the stick of sophomore standout Tyler Luikkonen (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.); however, the Gee-Gees fired back to force overtime when Matheiu Ouellette snuck one past Willows with 2:12 remaining in the third period.

Ottawa goaltender Russell Abbott made 25 saves in the win.
