Box Score Team captain Blake Boddy scored two goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night (Nov. 22) in North Bay, Ont.
With their third straight win, the Blues improve to 9-4-0 and move into a three-way tie with Lakehead and Windsor for first place in the OUA West division.
Third-year forward Jeff Brown (Toronto) opened the scoring midway through the first period, but Nipissing's Connor O'Donnell evened the score with just three seconds left on the clock as the game remained tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Boddy notched his first of the game on the powerplay 1:42 into the second; however, the Lakers answered right back again with a goal from Lucas McKinley. Boddy notched his second at the 13:42 mark of the second frame and Toronto held the 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Fourth-year forward Michael Markovic scored a team-leading 10th goal three minutes into the third, which stood as the game-winner. Second-year defenceman Dylan Heide added an insurance marker with less than seven minutes to go and the Lakers notched a late one on the powerplay to round out the 5-3 victory.
Blues netminder Garrett Sheehan made 27 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they head to Sudbury, Ont., to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
