Second-year forward Andrew Doyle scored two goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win over the Carleton Ravens on Friday night (Nov. 15) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 7-4-0 and remain tied with Lakehead for second place in the OUA West division. The Ravens drop to 6-3-1 and move into fourth in the East.
Sophomore defenceman Lane Werbowski was the OT hero, netting the game-winner 1:22 into the extra frame. The Winnipeg native received a cross-ice pass from team captain Blake Boddy and wired the puck into the bottom right corner of the net.
Doyle opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the game as he received a breakout pass from linemate Tyler von Engelbrechten and finished off a 2-on-1 with a beautiful shot over Carleton netminder Ryan Dube's glove. The Blues held onto the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Doyle then notched his second of the game just 12 seconds into the second period. The Richmond Hill, Ont., native received another pass from von Engelbrechten, this time on a 2-on-2 break, and made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
The Ravens got on the board three minutes later with a goal off the stick of Damian Cross and Tim Billingsley evened the score with 19 seconds remaining in the second period.
Fourth-year netminder Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) made 36 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow night as they host the RMC Paladins at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.Â
