TORONTO (CIS) – The University of Toronto Varsity Blues edged the Laval Rouge et Or 2-1 in their first-ever meeting to claim fifth place in the 2013 CIS women's soccer championship consolation final on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Centre.
The host Blues finish fifth for the second time in as many appearances on the national stage. Toronto defeated UPEI 2-0 in the consolation final when they last hosted the CIS championship in 2009. U of T is now 4-2-0 at the CIS tournament.
Toronto dropped a narrow 1-0 decision in their championship debut on Thursday night but bounced back with a 2-1 victory over the OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks to earn a spot in today's fifth-place game.
"We had a great opportunity today to show once again that we are among the best team in the country," said Blues head coach Anthony Captosto. "I can't say enough about how the team performed and how deserving they were of the win today."
Playing in her final game as a Varsity Blue, CIS second team all-Canadian Diana Esteireiro of Etobicoke, Ont., opened the scoring in the 27
th minute off a free kick as she sent a booming shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net. It was her second goal of the tournament, both off free kicks.
"Diana is one of a kind," continued Capotosto. "It is going to be very difficult to replace Diana. She has made a very significant contribution to this program throughout her career. I was very fortunate to work with her."
Laval evened the score in the 34
th minute as Mélissande Guy (Québec City) crossed the ball to Léa Chastenay-Joseph of Donnacona, Que., who one-timed it into the net for her tournament-leading third goal. The game remained 1-1 at the half.
Burlington, Ont., native Shaylea Badovinac put the Blues ahead, notching the eventual game-winner as she headed in a beautiful cross from team co-captain Aisha Lewis (Mississauga) in the 60
th minute.
Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci came up with a big save in the 81
st minute to preserve the 2-1 victory for the Blues.
"It's incredible," said Esteireiro after the game. "We came into it knowing that a medal was out of the question but we wanted to finish the best we possibly could and I think we did that."
Laval ends their season with a 11-6-2 record and looks forward to hosting the CIS women's soccer championship next season.
"We played well once again but we are going to have to find a way to score," said assistant coach Marie-Pier Bilodeau. "We had a great season overall. In general we have a young group and we are losing only one player so next year. Our objective at the beginning of the season was to get here. I think we're disappointed because when we got here we thought we could have medalled. We are disappointed with the result here but not with the way we played as a team."
