Fourth-year forward Michael Markovic scored two goals in leading the Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night (Oct. 10) at Varsity Arena.
Â
The season-opening win was certainly a positive won for the Blues, who fell to the Gee-Gees in East quarter-final action last season.
Â
Markovic (Toronto) opened the scoring 5:38 into the game as he wired a shot over Ottawa goalie Harrison May's blocker. U of T held the 1-0 lead after the first period.
Â
With six minutes remaining in the second period, third-year forward Tyler von Engelbrechten stick handled around a few Gee-Gees and found Andrew Doyle for the shot – Markovic was there to bang home the rebound. Toronto led 2-0 after 40 minutes.
Â
Fourth-year forward Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) notched his first as the team's captain, receiving a pass from rookie Connor Cleverley for the one-timer goal early in the third period.
Â
Ottawa's Taylor Collins spoiled the shut out midway through the third and Nicolas Therrien notched a powerplay marker with 2:36 to go to bring the game within one. Despite a last minute Ottawa powerplay, U of T held on for the victory.
Â
Third-year netminder Brett Willows (Rivers, Man.) was solid between the pipes, making 32 saves in the win.
Â
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the McGill Redmen at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
