RAMS TOP BLUES IN BATTLE OF TORONTO

Box Score The Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 6-4 to the Ryerson Rams on Sunday, January 6 at Mattamy Athletic Centre.

With the loss, the Blues remain in third place in the OUA East with a 10-5-3 record, while the Rams (6-12-0) move into a tie for eighth with the Concordia Stingers.

Special teams played a major role in the game's outcome, with both teams combining for 88 penalty minutes. The Blues went 3-for-7 on the man advantage and added one short handed marker, with the Rams converting on 2-of-6 opportunities.

The Rams came out flying and outshot the Blues 12-5 in the early goings; however, first-year Blues defenceman and Winnipeg native Lane Werbowski opened the scoring, converting on Toronto's first power play chance of the game.

Ryerson captain Andrew Buck evened the score with 18 seconds remaining to leave the game deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Sophomore forward Jeff Brown (Toronto) netted the go-ahead goal, U of T's second power play goal of the game, just 2:08 into the second frame.

Six minutes later, the two teams exchanged markers to bring the score to 3-2. Third-year standout Michael Markovic (Toronto) notched an unassisted, short handed marker and Ryerson's Jamie Wise responded on the man advantage just 35 seconds later.

The home team surged ahead, scoring two goals in 32 seconds and held the 4-3 advantage heading into the final period.

Ryerson carried that momentum over, notching two goals in the first 2:22 of the third to build a 6-3 lead. Markovic netted his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to two, but the Blues were unable to find the back of the net again.

Third-year netminder Garrett Sheehan made 29 saves in the loss.

The Blues return home this Saturday, January 12 as they host the RMC Paladins (2-15-2) at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
