Box Score Team captain Matt Walters had one goal and one assist as the Varsity Blues men's hockey team opened 2013 with a 3-2 overtime win over the Queen's Gaels on Saturday night (Jan. 5) at Kingston Memorial Centre.
Walters notched the game-tying goal on a 6-on-5 advantage with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, and assisted fellow defenceman Tyler Turcotte's OT winner 38 seconds into the extra frame.
Trailing 1-0 after the first period, fifth-year forward Cassidy Preston got the Blues on the board midway through the second frame. The Gaels tallied a late marker to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Second-year goaltender Brett Willows made 29 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues have a tight turnaround as they take on the Ryerson Rams tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
