BLUES FALL IN OT ON THE ROAD

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team lost 4-3 in overtime to the Western Mustangs on Sunday, January 27 in London.

Western rookie Kryshandra Green (Caledon, Ont.) put home the game-winner with only 13 seconds remaining in the extra period, snapping the Blues four-game winning streak.

Stacey Oue (Scarborough, Ont.) and Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) each put up a goal and an assist for the Varsity Blues in the tough loss. Western was led by three points from Stacey Scott (London, Ont.), while Kendra Deller (London, Ont.) and Cassidy Gosling (London, Ont.) each had two points as well.

Blues goaltender Kirsta Funke (Regina, Sask.) stopped 41 of 45 shots, while her counterpart Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) made 26 saves for the Mustangs.

After a scoreless first period the Blues opened the scoring midway through the second frame when Callie Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) scored from April Looije (Mississauga, Ont.) and Oue on the power play.

The Mustangs answered twice in the final two minutes of the period with goals from Tara Cation (Caledon, Ont.) and Scott. Gosling assisted on both markers, the first coming with the man advantage and the second with only five seconds left.

Deller’s even strength goal just under eight minutes into the third gave Western a 3-1 edge. Toronto jumped back in the game with another power play marker 91 seconds later when Day found the back of the net. The Blues tied it 3-3 with under five minutes to go tanks to their third power play goal on the night, when Oue put home the feed from Day.

The Varsity Blues (13-8-2) next action will be on Saturday, February 2 when the host the York Lions (6-13-3) in Varsity Arena at 4 p.m.
