Box Score The Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime decision to the visiting Queen's Gaels on Saturday, January 19 at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues fall to 12-7-3 on the season, and remain fourth in the OUA East division.
Despite the loss, Blues goaltender Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) was stellar, making 41 saves to give his team a chance to win.
Jeff Brown (Toronto) picked up a goal and an assist. The sophomore forward leads the team with 29 points in just 22 games, and came into tonight's action ranked ninth in the OUA. Team captain Matt Walters (Winnipeg), and Paul Van De Velde (Mariapolis, Man.) also scored for the Blues.
U of T held the lead for most of the evening, including a dominant period that saw them score two powerplay goals to go up 2-0 on the visiting squad. Brown opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game. The Blues leading scorer was the recipient of a cross crease pass from Scarborough native Blake Boddy, and needed only to tap it into an empty cage. Brown then took a turn making a beautiful pass of his own, faking a shot before slapping it through the seam to Walters, who buried it to put the Blues up by two.
The Gaels came out firing in the second however, registering twenty shots on goal in the middle frame alone. Sheehan was up to the task, stopping 19 of 20, but had no chance of stopping Alexi Pianosi's point shot that found its way through traffic to cut the Blues lead to one.
Sheehan made several more miraculous saves to preserve the lead, including stretching out to rob Gaels' forward Tyler Moore of a sure goal, but the Gaels would tie the game in the third on a goal from rookie forward Steve Schmidt.
The Blues regained the lead shortly after, when Van De Velde took a pass from Michael Markovic (Toronto) and roofed it over the shoulder of Gaels goaltender Riley Whitlock. But they would surrender that lead soon after on a goal by Corey Bureau, who fought his way through U of T's defense to tie the game.
The game then went to overtime, and two minutes in, Joey Derochie pounced on a rebound to lift the Gaels to a 4-3 victory.
The Gaels were lead offensively by Schmidt, who registered a goal and an assist in the win.
The Blues return to action Wednesday, January 23, when they travel to the Mattamy Athletic Centre to take on the Ryerson Rams. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
