NO. 9 RAVENS EDGE BLUES ON THE ROAD

Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to the first-place Carleton Ravens on Friday night (Jan. 18) at the Ice House in Ottawa.

The loss leaves Toronto (12-6-3) in sole possession of fourth place, two points behind the UQTR Patriotes (14-5-1) and McGill Redmen (14-6-1). The Ravens remain atop the East standings with a 15-5-2 record.

Both teams came out ready and raring to go, as the Ravens notched two goals in the first 2:44 of the contest. U of T captain Matt Walters responded just 50 seconds later to get the Blues on the board.

Carleton added one more midway through the frame and carried a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission.

Third-year forward Michael Markovic notched his ninth goal of the season on the powerplay to cut Carleton’s lead to one; however, the home team struck again late in the second period and maintained a two-goal gap (4-2) heading into the final frame.

Ravens Joey Manley added an insurance marker 12:00 into the third period. Toronto rookie Lane Webowski added a late tally but it wasn’t enough.

Second-year goaltender Brett Willows (Rivers, Man.) made 22 saves in the loss.

The Blues look to bounce back tomorrow night as they host the Queen’s Gaels (7-9-4) at Varsity Arena. The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada starting at 7:30 p.m.
