BLUES LOOKING FOR A BIG W IN WATERLOO

The Varsity Blues football team continues their road stretch as they head to Waterloo for a battle with the Warriors this Saturday, September 29 at Warrior Field.

The game will be streamed live via SSN Canada and live stats will be available at varsityblues.ca.

Both teams are 1-3 heading into Week 5 of OUA football action. The Blues lone win came on opening night with a 19-0 shut out over the Laurier Golden Hawks, while the Warriors are coming off their first win since 2009 after edging the York Lions 23-22 last week in Toronto.

U of T holds the upper hand over Waterloo with a 19-17-2 regular season head-to-head record, dating back to their first meeting in 1968.

Saturday’s contest is vital for the Blues post-season hopes. Toronto put their offensive woes to rest in last week’s narrow loss to Guelph, thanks in large part to back-up quarterback Simon Nassar. The Toronto native threw for 106 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for one, in less than two quarters of action.

Rookie running back Ashton Nelson has rushed for over 100 yards in all but one game this season and will need to lead the charge over Waterloo’s last-ranked defence in the CIS. Third-year receivers Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass, as well as veteran Todd Inkila, found a grove versus the Gryphons and will look to carry that over to Week 5

Second-year linebacker Dylan Gordon had a breakout game last week and now leads the Blues with 20.5 tackles. Defensive back Spenser Stewart, rookie John Connors and lineman Everton Williams all have over 16 tackles so far in 2012.

U of T will have to be weary of third-year receiver Nick Anapolsky, who currently ranks third in the OUA with 498 receiving yards. Waterloo’s Brandon Corelli and Yazeed Sinan are forces to be reckoned with on defence. The duo has combined for over 45 tackles in four games this season.

The Varsity Blues return home for Minor Football Day on Thanksgiving Saturday, Oct. 6, when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (0-4) at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
