The Varsity Blues football team heads to Guelph for a tough Week 4 battle with the Gryphons on Saturday, September 22 at Alumni Stadium.
After opening the season with a 19-0 shutout of the Laurier Golden Hawks, the Blues have been on the wrong end of two losses to the Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers and will look to jump back to .500 on Saturday.
The Gryphons started 2012 with a loss to the defending Vanier Cup champion McMaster Marauders, but have rebounded with big wins over Windsor and Waterloo and now sit at 2-1.
Saturday’s game will be televised nationally as part of theScore’s University Rush series. It will also be streamed live on SSN Canada, with live stats available through gryphons.ca.
Guelph will be out for revenge after Toronto defeated the Gryphons for the first time since 1995 with a 21-12 win on national television last season. The Gryphons hold a 20-14-1 head-to-head record over U of T since their first meeting in 1976.
U of T will need a solid and balanced attack if it’s going to be successful over the Gryphons. Sophomore quarterback Richard Quittenton along with third-year receivers Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass need to connect on some big plays through the air, while rookie running back Ashton Nelson will need to hit the ground running, often and early.
Blues rookie defensive back John Connors currently leads the Blues with 17.5 tackles, while Gryphons linebackers Jake Reinhart and John Rush have recorded 20 and 21.5 tackles apiece so far this season.
Toronto’s next home game is Saturday, October 6 when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
