Joey Manley scored on the powerplay 4:25 into the second overtime period as the Carleton Ravens took the third and deciding game, 4-3, over the Varsity Blues in the OUA East men’s hockey quarter-final series on Sunday night (Feb. 19) at Varsity Arena.
A native of Ottawa, Manley fired a booming shot from the point over Blues goaltender Garrett Sheehan’s blocker to seal the come-from-behind win.
Carleton won the first game of the series 6-2 in Ottawa before the Blues rebounded with a 3-0 shut out win to force game 3 last night.
Sheehan posted 52 saves in the losing effort, while Ravens netminder Matthew Dopud made 24 saves in the win.
After getting tripped by Carleton’s Linden Bahm, Blues leading scorer Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) converted on the first powerplay just 30 seconds into the game, banging in a Paul Van De Velde shot at the back post of the net.
Scarborough, Ont., native Kyle Ventura put the Blues up by two just three minutes later when he found himself all alone in front and tipped in a Michael Markovic shot from the half boards.
The Ravens got on the board 8:10 into the first period when Joe Pleckaitis gained the puck in Toronto’s slot and wired a shot into the top corner of the net.
Toronto almost extended their lead once again as Elliott came out of the penalty box and wired a shot off the crossbar. The Blues held a 2-1 lead after the first period.
Both teams exchanged scoring chances to open the second period. Dopud came up with a highlight reel save on a Toronto 2-on-1 five minutes into the frame.
The Ravens would even the game on their next powerplay opportunity when Brandon McLean found a loose puck at the back post and jammed it in.
Second-year forward Blake Boddy looked as though he had the go-ahead goal when he picked off a pass in front of the net, but his backhand deke sailed wide past Dopud. However, on the ensuing play, Blues defenceman Matt Walters wired a low shot from the point through traffic to give the home team a 3-2 lead at the end of two periods.
The Ravens again evened the score five minutes into the third period as Jordan Deagle took a centering pass in front and one-timed the puck into the top corner.
