Fifth-year forward Brenley Jorgensen recorded her 100th career point as the No. 10 Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 4-1 in their fifth annual Cheer Blue, Think Pink game on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11) at Varsity Arena.
Jorgensen netted her 55th career goal, Toronto’s third of the game, 6:23 into the second period. The Kingston, Ont., native has amassed 55 goals and 45 assists in 120 games and joins only seven other U of T players, including the likes of Olympian Lori Dupuis, to ever crack the 100-point mark.
“I was in front of the net open and waiting and when I got it I just shot it as hard as I could,” said Jorgensen after the game. “It’s an incredible honour. It doesn’t feel like I deserve to have all these points because it’s always my team helping me out.”
The win extends Toronto’s win streak to four and lifts them into third place with a 15-9-1 record, two points ahead of the Queen’s Gaels (13-9-3).
“This was a big win for us,” said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. “A great accomplishment for Brenley and a great feeling within the team going into our last regular season game tomorrow.”
The Blues opened the scoring midway through the first period as rookie forward Jacqueline Scheffel dangled a defenceman in front of the net and sent a backhand into the far side of the net.
Third-year forward and Varsity Blues athlete of the week Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) put the Blues up by two with 1:06 remaining in the first when she tapped in a rebound off a Brittany Kirby point shot.
After Jorgensen’s tally, the Ridgebacks finally got on the board on the man advantage halfway through the second period. Third-year forward and Whitby, Ont., native Sarah Worthington found the puck at the side of the net and beat Blues goaltender Nicole Kesteris.
Madoc, Ont., native Ragan Danford added an insurance marker for the Blues late in the third period as she jumped on a rebound off a Callie Bazak wrap-around attempt.
Kesteris posted 29 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow as they host their final regular season home game versus the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Arena. The Blues will honour their graduating players in a special pre-game ceremony before the puck drops at 2 p.m.
