SPECIAL TEAMS PROVE COSTLY

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday, December 2 at Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa.

U of T heads into the December break in sixth place with a 9-7-1 record. The Ridgebacks improve to 7-7-2 and sit just three points back with a game in hand.

The win marks UOIT’s second in regulation, and third ever, over the Blues since their first meeting on Oct. 28, 2007.

Toronto quickly found themselves in penalty trouble and the Ridgebacks took full advantage. Zoe Battie and Melissa Berney each scored on separate 5-on-3 opportunities to give the home team a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the contest.

It was a game of catch up from there. Fifth-year forward Callie Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) got the Blues on the board 4:27 into the second period; however, the Ridgebacks answered back just over a minute later with a tally from Jennifer Sisson.

Bazak then set up April Looije midway through the game to bring the score within one (3-2) heading into the final frame. Despite outshooting UOIT 11-6 in the third period, Toronto could not find the back of the net again.

The Blues went 0-for-5 on the powerplay in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice Jan. 4-6 at the Waterloo tournament, before resuming regular season play on Friday, January 11 with a game at Laurier.

The University of Toronto is the proud host of the 2013 CIS women's hockey championship, March 7-10, at Varsity Arena.
