MEN’S HOCKEY HOPES TO CLIMB STANDINGS THIS WEEKEND

After a 0-1-1 weekend in Quebec, the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team needs four points this weekend to regain top status in the OUA heading into the December break.

The Blues host the third-place Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night and eighth-place Concordia Stingers on Saturday at Varsity Arena. Game time on both nights is 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale here

Saturday’s game will feature the Blues first annual Holiday Toy Toss and Food Drive. Click here for more info.

With losses to the top-seeded UQTR Patriotes and CIS defending champion McGill Redmen, the Blues dropped to 7-4-3 and sit in fourth place in the East. However, this weekend’s results could see U of T rise to second or drop as far as sixth in the highly competitive OUA East division.

Toronto’s goaltending continues to be the story of the season. The Blues have allowed an East-leading 38 goals against, thanks to the superb play of sophomore Brett Willows and third-year netminder Garrett Sheehan.  Sheehan sits fourth and Willows second in the OUA with 0.921 and 0.926 save percentages, respectively.

Two Blues have averaged more than a point a game, while three forwards had 13 points in 14 games so far this season.  Veteran Kyle Ventura of Scarborough, Ont., leads the team with nine goals and six assists, while sophomore Jeff Brown (Toronto) has eight goals and seven helpers in his first season with the Varsity Blues.

Third-year forward Blake Boddy has a team-high 10 assists, while both Paul Van De Velde and Tyler Liukkonen have 13 points on the year.
