BLUES HOLD OFF LATE RALLY TO DOWN BADGERS

Box Score Six different players scored as the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 17) at Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.

Team captain Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) notched two goals and added one assist as the Blues improve to 8-3-1 and move into a tie for fourth place with the Western Mustangs. The Badgers (0-11-1) remain winless in 12 games played this season.

Rookie forward Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) had her first career three-point performance, with one goal and two helpers.

The Blues opened up the scoring at the 1:52 mark of the first period as Waubaushene, Ont., native Jacqueline Scheffel potted her third goal of the season. Toronto continued to ride the momentum taking an early 4-1 lead on the goals from Day, O’Hanlon and Amanda Ricker (Ottawa).

U of T continued to pressure the Badgers in the second period as O’Hanlon netted her second goal of the game on a power play, giving the visiting team a 5-1 stranglehold over the Badgers going into the third period.  With her 10th goal of the season, O’Hanlon now ranks fifth in OUA women's hockey scoring.

The Badgers, still searching for their first victory of the season, would begin a valiant comeback effort in the third period. Brock outscored the Blues 4-2 and outshot them 17-7 in the third period.  Despite their effort, Toronto was able to hold on to preserve the victory. Stacey Oue tallied the game-winner midway through the period and Callie Bazak added some insurance to round out the scoring.

Third-year goalie Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) made 23 saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues have a quick turnaround as they head to Guelph, Ont., to take on the No. 10 Guelph Gryphons.  The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada starting at 2 p.m.
