Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team cruised past the RMC Paladins with a dominant 7-0 victory on Minor Hockey Night, Saturday, November 17 at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues add to their already impressive regular season record, improving to 7-3-2. They currently sit in second in the OUA East division, one point back of UQTR for the division lead.
The Blues showcased their scoring depth, getting goals from six different players. Second-year forward Jeff Brown (Toronto) continued his stellar start to the season, grabbing two goals and an assist to take the outright team-lead in points with 15. Scarborough natives Blake Boddy and Kyle Ventura also contributed to their team-leading totals. Boddy picked up a goal and two assist, and now leads the team with 10 helpers, while Ventura notched a goal and an assist. He leads the team with eight goals.
Toronto goaltender Brett Willows came into tonight’s action second in the nation with a 0.940 save percentage. The second-year Rivers, Man. native added to those numbers by making 25 saves en route to the shutout victory, the third of his career.
The Blues took control of the game early, firing 14 shots on goal in the first period, and connecting twice on goals from Boddy, and Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.). Kay opened the scoring at 5:40 after Michael Markovic showed incredible speed, flying past the RMC defence and dishing the puck to Kay, who one-timed it just inside the post. Boddy would score just over a minute later on a similar play, when he fought off a Paladins defender and poked the puck along the ice through goaltender Paul Dorsey to put the Blues up 2-0.
Brown helped put the game out of reach in the second period, with back-to-back goals. At 11:15, he scored a powerplay goal on a rebound off a shot from Boddy, and then with just over a minute remaining, he took a drop pass from Ventura and snapped it past Dorsey to make it 4-0 in favour of the Blues.
The Blues took advantage of more powerplay opportunities in the third, grabbing two man-advantage goals to finish the game 3-for-9 on the powerplay.
Evan Deviller replaced Paul Dorsey in net to start the third, and made 14 saves for the Paladins.
The Blues next game is on Friday, November 23, when they travel to Montreal to take on the McGill Redmen. Game time is 7 p.m.
