Box Score Jasmine Lewin recorded 17 points as the Varsity Blues women’s basketball team defeated the No. 9 Laurier Golden Hawks 58-54 on Friday night (Nov. 16) in Waterloo, Ont.
Toronto’s third straight win leaves them in sole possession of first place in the OUA East, while Laurier drops to 1-1.
A fourth-year guard, Lewin led all players with 17 points for the second consecutive game this season. The Brampton, Ont., native added six boards on the night.
Veteran forward Alicia Van Kampen (Orangeville, Ont.) went 7-for-10 from the free throw line, ending the night with 11 points and nine rebounds. Niagara Falls, Ont., native Amanda Lauzon notched a game-high 12 boards, while adding seven points and Julie Longauer tallied nine points in the win.
The Blues came out ready to go and built a 16-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. Laurier rallied midway through the second quarter and evened the score at 22-22 with three minutes remaining in the half.
Lewin drained three jumpers in a row to give U of T a 30-25 lead at the midway point of the game.
Toronto maintained a comfortable six-point lead for the majority of the third quarter; however, the Blues got into foul trouble towards the end of the frame and Laurier brought the score within two (44-42) heading into the fourth.
The Hawks came back to take the lead with four minutes remaining, but another four quick points from Lewin gave the visitors back the lead for good.
Whitney Ellenor led the Hawks with 13 points, with Kaitlyn Schenck adding 12 in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the floor tomorrow night as they finish their Waterloo road trip versus the Warriors. The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada, beginning at 6 p.m.
