Box Score Fourth-year forward Kyle Ventura scored Toronto’s lone goal as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime to the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night (Nov. 16) in North Bay, Ont.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 6-3-2, but remain in second place in the OUA East division.
Both teams combined for 82 minutes in what proved to be a penalty-filled affair, with neither squad able to capitalize on 17 combined powerplays. Toronto had taken the previous two games of the season series, 5-2 and 3-2, in October. The two teams won’t meet again until Jan. 13 in Toronto.
After Nipissing’s Lucas McKinley opened the scoring midway through the second frame, Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) evened the score 4:30 into the third period with his team-high seventh goal of the season.
Lakers Marcus Watson proved to be the overtime hero, netting the game-winner 2:48 into the extra frame to secure the two points on this night.
Third-year Blues netminder Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) made 31 saves in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow night as they host the RMC Paladins on Minor Hockey Night at Varsity Arena. Advance tickets are on sale here. The game will also be streamed live, starting with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
