WOMEN’S HOCKEY PREPARES FOR CRUCIAL ROAD GAMES

With only six points separating first and sixth place, every game is a must-win in the tightly contested OUA women’s hockey standings. The Varsity Blues continue their road stretch with games at Brock and Guelph this weekend (Nov. 17-18).

Toronto is currently 7-3-1, off to their best start since the 2008-09 season, and sit sixth, just one point behind the Windsor Lancers (8-4-0) and Guelph Gryphons (7-3-2).

The Blues are coming off two narrow 3-2 losses to the No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks (10-1-1) and York Lions (4-7-1). Prior to that, U of T won five straight.

Second-year netminder and Regina native Krista Funke leads the OUA with a 0.954 save percentage, while third-year goalie Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) also boasts an impressive 0.933 percentage.

Fourth-year forward and team captain Kelly O’Hanlon leads the team and ranks ninth in the OUA with eight goals and four assists in 12 games.  Rookie forward Taylor Day has seven points, while Sonja Weidenfelder and Amanda Ricker each have six points so far this season.

The Blues have already defeated both Brock and Guelph this season. Toronto topped the Badgers 4-2 and edged the Gryphons 2-1 in a shoot out in their last two home games in October.

The Varsity Blues return home on Sunday, November 25 when they host the Ryerson Rams at Varsity Arena at 6 p.m.
