BLUES EDGE RAMS ON TDSB HOCKEY DAY

Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team topped the Ryerson Rams 3-2 to the delight of over 3,000 students and young hockey fans on TDSB Hockey Day on Thursday, October 25 at Varsity Arena.

The Blues remain undefeated in regulation time this season, and improve their record to 4-0-1, which is good for first place in the OUA East division.

Toronto native Jeff Brown continued his torrid start to the season, picking up a goal for his seventh point in five games.  Sophomore forward Tyler Liukkonen (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) had a goal and an assist, and Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) put up two points of his own with two helpers in the win. Rookie forward Andrew Doyle (Richmond Hill, Ont.) also picked up his first career goal and the eventual game-winner.

The Blues fed off the energy of 3,000 screaming students in the first, jumping on the Rams and grabbing the first goal just three minutes into the period. Brown fought off several Ryerson defenders to get to the net and managed to jam the puck behind Rams goaltender Troy Passingham to put the Blues up 1-0. The goal is Brown’s third in the past two games, as he continues to impress in his first season with the Blues.

The Rams would respond on an odd-man rush near the end of the first. After Blues goalie Garrett Sheehan made the initial save on a shot from Dan Lombardi, Victor Terreri managed to bury the rebound to tie the game.

Ryerson jumped ahead early in the second period, as Lombardi and Terreri connected a second time, with Lombardi picking up the tally this time to put the Rams ahead 2-1.

The Blues refused to relinquish momentum however, going on to outshoot the Rams 17-6 in the second. They had several chances to knot the score before Liukkonen finished off a jam play from Boddy to make it 2-2 heading into the third.

Toronto continued to fire from all angles in the final frame, directing another 11 shots towards Passingham. The persistence paid off at 16:57. After Charlie McDonald’s (North Vancouver) shot ricocheted off a Rams defender in the slot, it was corralled by Doyle, who skated around Passingham and tucked it into the net for his first career goal.

Sheehan, who owns the OUA’s best save percentage, shut the door the rest of the way, making 25 saves to lead the Blues to their fourth win in the first five games of the season.

Passingham made 39 saves in the losing effort, while Lombardi and Terreri picked up two points each for the Rams.

The Blues return to action tomorrow (October 26), when they travel to Nipissing to take on the Lakers. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
