Box Score The Varsity Blues fell 2-1 in a shoot out to the Carleton Ravens on Thursday, October 18 at Varsity Arena.
U of T continues to get solid goaltending from their tandem of Garrett Sheehan and Brett Willows. The two netminders have combined to allow only four goals in three games so far this season. Sheehan, a native of Cremona, Alta. got the start in net, and was sharp, making 35 saves in regulation, and turning aside four shooters in the shootout. Cassidy Preston (North Bay, Ont.) had the Blues lone goal. Preston has four goals in three games so far this season.
The Blues came out hitting in the opening frame, laying several big body checks, including two monstrous open-ice hits from rookie defencemen Dylan Heide (Winnipeg, Man.). Toronto was unable to transfer their physical edge into goals however, and Carleton opened the scoring six minutes into the period on a goal from Joe Pleckaitis. After a wide-angle shot rebounded off Sheehan, several players crashed the net and the puck bounced off Pleckaitis and into the net.
The Ravens continued to outshoot the Blues in the second period, but Sheehan was up to the task. The third-year goaltender made 16 saves, including a tremendous double-pad stack to rob Carleton forward Ryan Maclean during a 2-on-1 rush.
Sheehan allowed the Blues to hang around in the game, and his team rewarded him at 14:30 of the third, when Preston took a pass from Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.) and came off the half boards before snapping it just inside the post to tie the game at one.
Toronto had several chances to take the lead shortly after, the best of which saw Kyle Ventura’s quick wrister swatted away from the top corner by Ravens’ goaltender Ryan Dube. But neither team could find the back of the net through the remainder of the third.
Overtime solved nothing as well, and the game went to a shootout, still knotted at 1-1.
First-year Blues forward Jeff Brown was the only shooter to beat Dube. The Toronto native came in with speed and rifled a shot five-hole past the Ravens netminder.
The Ravens would get goals from Joey West, and Ryan MacLean, and a stop from Dube on Kyle Ventura to give Carleton the victory.
The Ravens are now 1-1-1 on the season.
The Blues next game is this Saturday, October 20, when they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
