BLUES SOLID IN WIN OVER LAKERS

Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team rolled over the Nipissing Lakers 5-2 on Sunday, October 14 at Varsity Arena.

The Blues are undefeated to open their 2012-13 season with a 2-0 record, and have outscored their opponents 9-3 over those two games.

Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) and Toronto native Jeff Brown each had a goal and two assists, while team captain Matt Walters (Winnipeg, Man.) picked up a goal and an assist. Despite the lopsided score, there was no lack of action in the Blues end, but Brett Willows (Rivers, Man.) was stellar in his first start of the season, making 44 saves for the win.

Boddy opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period after a goal mouth scrum, when he pounced on a loose puck behind the net, brought it out front, and fired it home before Nipissing goaltender Daniel Spence could retrieve his lost stick.

The Blues would add to their lead just 34 seconds into period two. Second-year defencemen Tim Halloran (Scarborough, Ont.) wired a slapshot from the point that bounced off a Nipissing defender and floated over a helpless Spence into the net. Sault Ste Marie, Ont. native Tyler Liukkonen made it 3-0 six minutes later on the powerplay. The second-year forward took a pass from Walters in the corner and faked skating behind the net before jamming the puck short-side past Spence.

Nipissing finally broke through Willows midway through the second on the powerplay. The Blues netminder made several miraculous saves, as the Lakers turned Toronto’s end into a shooting gallery, but lost his stick during the fray and was unable to stop a blast from Lakers defensemen Jeff Leaist.

The Blues would respond with a powerplay goal of their own, when rookie defenceman Dylan Heide (Winnipeg, Man.) scored with a hard wrist shot on a 5-on-3 advantage with just two seconds remaining in the second period.

Toronto never looked back, as they added a third period goal from Walters, and cruised the rest of the way to a 5-2 victory.

Willows impressive effort earned him the first star of game.

Nipissing forward Conor O’Donnell also scored in the third.

The Blues return to action this Thursday, October 18th, when they host the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Arena. Game time is 7:30pm.
