PRESTON TALLIES THREE IN SEASON OPENER VICTORY

Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team opened their 2012-13 regular season campaign with a 4-1 win over the RMC Paladins on Friday, October 12 at Constantine Arena in Kingston, Ont.
 
Fifth-year forward Cassidy Preston led the Blues with a hat trick in the win. After a scoreless first period, the North Bay, Ont., native got the Blues on the board 6:46 into the second frame.
 
Sophomore forward Tyler Liukkonen (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) put the Blues up by two with a powerplay goal late in the period. Preston then added his second of the night less than two minutes later to give the visiting squad a 3-0 advantage heading into the final frame.
 
RMC’s Eric Louis-Seize spoiled the Blues shut out with an unassisted goal with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Preston added his third marker on an empty-netter in the final minute of play.
 
Veteran forwards Michael Markovic (Toronto) and Rob Kay (Orono, Ont.) each tallied two assists in the win. Third-year Blues goaltender Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) made 24 saves in the win.
 
The Varsity Blues return to the ice this Sunday, October 14 as they host the Nipissing Lakers at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
