Rookie defenceman Tim Holloran notched his first career goal but the Varsity Blues fell short, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in OUA men’s hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Sports Complex Arena.
The loss drops Toronto to 9-6-3 as they remain in sixth place, while Ottawa moves into third place in the OUA East with a 12-7-1 record.
“We did not have a very good start,” said Varsity Blues head coach Darren Lowe. “We really started playing well in the second and had some great chances to score. We hit a post and cross bar in the third. The difference today was special teams – they were 2-for-7 and we were 0-for-8.”
Holloran’s (Scarborough, Ont.) goal came at 13:21 in the second period, an even-strength marker assisted by Cassidy Preston and Marcus Yolevski.
The Gee-Gees on the other hand capitalized on their early man advantages and built a 2-0 lead after the first period, scoring two goals within a minute of each other.
Second-year U of T goaltender Garrett Sheehan Cremona, Alta., made 26 saves in the loss.
Toronto will look to rebound this coming Friday, January 13 as they host the Ryerson Rams at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
