The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team came away with a 3-1 victory over the RMC Paladins on Saturday night (Jan. 6) in Kingston, Ont.
Scarborough, Ont., native Kyle Ventura opened the scoring with 4:29 to go in the second period as he received a pass from rookie defenceman Kevin Deagle and wired a shot past RMC goaltender Andrew Flemming. The Blues carried the one-goal advantage into the final frame.
Sophomore standout Blake Boddy of Ajax, Ont., put the Blues ahead by two just 1:20 into the third period with a goal assisted by Jeff Zippel. RMC responded just over a minute later as Scott Domenico sent a booming shot through Blues netminder Brett Willow’s legs.
Toronto added some insurance as fifth-year veteran and assistant captain Dan Brewer notched a powerplay goal with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
"I thought we played very well for our first game back from the exam break," said Varsity Blues head coach Darren Lowe. "Our forecheck was excellent and allowed us to generate a lot of scoring chances."
The win lifts the Blues to 9-5-3 and leaves them in sixth place in the OUA East division.
The Varsity Blues have a tight turn-around as they take on the Gee-Gees (11-7-1) in Ottawa tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
