THIRD-PERIOD COLLAPSE SINKS BLUES

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 5 Guelph Gryphons on Thursday night (Jan. 26) at Gryphon Centre Arena.

First-year forward Leila Chan-Currie scored Toronto’s lone goal midway through the second period in her first game as a Varsity Blue.

The Gryphons overcame the second-period deficit with three unanswered tallies in the third to notch their 16th win of the season.

“I thought we were the better team tonight but if you don’t score you won’t win,” said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. “We had a great first period with two breakaways but just couldn’t put the puck in the net. On a positive note, it was great to see Leila score in her first OUA game.”

Victoria Head evened the score 3:23 into the final frame, with Kimberley Wong adding the game-winner, an unassisted marker, just over 10 minutes later. Erin Small added the empty-netter to round out the win.

Second-year Blues goaltender Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) posted 27 saves in the loss.

U of T remains tied with the York Lions with an 11-9-1 record in fourth place, while the Gryphons (16-4-1) sit comfortable in second.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice in two days time (Jan. 28) as they head to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
