The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team notched three goals in the first six minutes of the game en route to a 4-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22) at George Bell Arena.
Toronto’s third win in their last four contests leaves them tied for fourth place with the York Lions, two points behind the third-place Queen’s Gaels.
"We really came out on fire today," said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. "Again, we kept it simple and did the little things like shoot low and crash the net. We do still need to improve on the powerplay, especially on 5-on-3 opportunities."
Varsity Blues rookie forward Jacqueline Scheffel scored 43 seconds into the contest to give the visiting squad a quick one-goal lead.
Sophomore Amanda Ricker and assistant captain Amanda Fawns went onto net two goals 10 seconds apart as Toronto built a commanding 3-0 lead in the first 5:46 of action.
Ragan Danford added the Blues fourth goal of the first period with 3:34 remaining to give U of T a 4-0 lead heading into the second period.
The game would remain scoreless until 4:52 into the third frame when Ryerson’s Kyla Thurston broke the shut out with what would be the Rams only goal of the game.
Rookie goaltender Krista Funke of Regina made 18 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues (11-8-1) return to the ice this Thursday night (Jan. 26) as they head to Guelph, Ont., for a battle with the Gryphons (15-4-1). The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
