BLUES PREPARE FOR ARGO CUP BATTLE

It’s the battle of Toronto as the Varsity Blues face the York Lions on the gridiron, vying for their fourth consecutive Argo Cup in the 42nd annual Red & Blue Bowl this Saturday, September 10 at York Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live streaming will be available through www.ssncanada.ca.

Since their first meeting in 1970, the Varsity Blues hold the upper hand with a 25-16-0 head-to-head record over the York Lions. U of T has won the past three Argo Cups, while previous to that, York squeaked out a 21-20 in 2007 to cap a 13-game winning streak in the series.

Both teams look for their first win of 2011 after the Blues dropped a 38-5 decision to the Windsor Lancers and York fell 46-7 to the Laurier Golden Hawks in their respective season openers.

“This is going to be a great game and we’re excited to get back on the field,” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. “Expectations are high, the tempo is up and we’re doing everything we can to prepare ourselves for a tough battle on Saturday.”

U of T fans wanting to go to the game can sign up for the ‘Quesada Burrito Bus’. The bus leaves Varsity Centre pavilion at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $4 in advance and include a return trip to York, plus a burrito, courtesy of Quesada Mexican Grill on Bloor St. Tickets are available at the pavilion, while supplies last.

The Varsity Blues return to Varsity Centre the following Saturday, September 17 when they host the Guelph Gryphons in their 2011 home opener. This game is part of University Rush and can be seen nationally on theScore. September 17 is also ‘OUA Football Day in Toronto’ – Click here for more details.
