The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team fell 3-1 (18- 25, 25-16, 31-29, 25-19) to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, February 12 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Jay Tremonti of Dryden, Ont., came out strong for the Blues in the first set of the match. The play began close, but soon after the first technical, the Lancers began to falter, losing a number of points to technical fouls. Veteran Adam Palmer of Ottawa and rookie Jake Dysselhof (Mississauga, Ont.) riddled the Lancers with shots, leading the Blues to a 25-18 victory.
In a complete reversal, the Lancers came out swinging in the second, led by Jimmy Elturk (Windsor, Ont.). At the second technical the Blues came close to a comeback at 16-13, but they couldn’t continue their pace for long and the Lancers shot ahead for a 25-16 runaway win.
The third was the closest set of the match. Elturk and Kyle Williamson kept the Lancers going, while Palmer and Tremonti fought back strong for the Blues. In an extremely tense final, tying more than eight times in the final minutes of play, Williamson notched the final kill for the Lancers at 31-29.
In the final set of the match, Dysselhof and fellow rookie Matthew Vares (Scarborough, Ont.) continued to lead the Blues with their offence. Ultimately however, the Lancers managed to nab the final match set, defeating the Blues 25-19.
Dysselhof led the Blues with 14 kills, followed up by Palmer with 11 and Vares with 10. Tremonti came in just behind with seven kills, while Michael Denton tallied a game-high 18 digs for the Blues.
For the Lancers, Williamson led all players with 19 kills, followed up by Harrison Oake (Rodney, Ont.) with 14, and Ryan Le (Windsor, Ont.) with 11.
The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow afternoon as they host the Western Mustangs in their final game of the regular season. Opening serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
