The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 decision versus the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday night (Nov. 4) at Campus Ice Centre.
The Blues won 11 straight games versus the Ridgebacks starting when the two teams first met on Oct. 28, 2007; However, UOIT has taken the last two games against Toronto, with a 2-1 shootout victory on Feb. 13, 2011 and tonight’s 2-1 win in regulation time.
After a scoreless first period, the Ridgebacks opened the scoring with a marker off the stick of Jill Morillo midway through the second period.
Five minutes later, veteran Blues defenceman Natalies Hughes took down a Ridgebacks forward, leaving UOIT with a penalty shot. U of T rookie goalie Krista Funke stepped up and came up with a huge save to keep the game within reach.
Just over a minute later, Ridgebacks Jaclyn Gibson would notch a shorthanded marker to put the home team up by two.
Blues captain Karolina Urban scored less than three minutes later to bring the game within one heading into the final frame.
Toronto outshot UOIT 12-6 in the third period but was unable to solve Jessica Larabie again and dropped their second straight game.
The Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they head to Kingston, Ont., to take on the OUA defending champion Queen’s Gaels. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
