Seven different players scored as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team recorded a 7-3 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19) at Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal.
With the win the Blues improve to 6-4-3 and sit in seventh place, only one point back from fourth in the OUA East division.
Toronto scored four second-period goals and added three in the third to round out the dominant win. Rookie goaltender Brett Willows of Rivers, Man., made 22 saves in his fourth win of the season.
Concordia’s Olivier Jannard struck first on the powerplay with 22 seconds remaining in the first period.
The Blues responded with three goals by sophomore forwards Anthony Bergin of Scarborough, Ont., Michael Markovic (Toronto) and Ajax, Ont., native Blake Boddy in the first 9:35 of the second period to take a lead that would not extinguish. Third-year forward Kyle Venture would add one more with 24 seconds to go to give U of T a 4-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Stingers forward Michael Blundon scored the home team’s second powerplay goal of the game 1:22 into the third. Blundon scored the overtime winner in Concordia’s 4-3 win over Toronto last Saturday in Toronto.
The two teams then traded goals over the next two minutes with Toronto’s Tyler Liukkonen and Byron Elliott potting one apiece and Concordia’s George Lovatsis finding the back of the net.
Cassidy Preston added one more marker with less than four minutes to go to round out the 7-4 Toronto victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 25 as they host the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
