Second-year forward Anthony Bergin’s two powerplay goals were not enough as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 3-2 in a shoot out to the UQTR Patriotes on Friday night (Nov. 18) at Jerome Cotnoir Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-4-3, while the Patriotes improve to 8-5-0 in the OUA East division.
Bergin opened the scoring with 4:55 remaining in the first period off a powerplay goal assisted by Blake Boddy and Dan Brewer. The Scarborough, Ont., native added his second goal of the night just 1:34 into the second frame. Brewer and Blues leading scorer Byron Elliott assisted the marker.
UQTR finally got on the board early in the third period with a goal off the stick of Jean-Sebastien Breton. Olivier Ouellett would even the score on a man advantage and force overtime with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.
After a scoreless overtime frame, the Patriotes would prove victorious in the shootout. Boddy scored Toronto’s lone shootout goal, while UQTR’s Felix Lefrancois and Breton sealed the win for the home team.
Blues rookie goalie Brett Willows made 34 saves in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
