The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team shut out the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-0 on Sunday, November 13 at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-5-1 and are now tied with the Waterloo Warriors for fifth place in the OUA standings.
The Blues came out ready and raring to go and it paid off. Toronto scored two goals in the first 7:23 of the first period to gain a lead that would not diminish.
Rookie defenceman April Looije of Mississauga, Ont., scored the eventual game-winner when she received a pass from Ragan Danford in the slot and found the back of the net 6:09 into the contest.
Fifth-year veteran and assistant captain Amanda Fawns (Scarborough, Ont.) put the Blues up by two a minute later as she sent a shot from behind the net that bounced off UOIT goaltender Jessica Larabie’s leg and in.
Blues team captain Karolina Urban of Kamloops, B.C., rounded out the scoring with a short handed marker with just over three minutes remaining in the third period. Fawns came streaking down the ice on a 2-on-1 and sent a behind-the-back pass to Urban, who deked the puck around Larabie and into the net.
Second-year goalie Nicole Kesteris of Aurora, Ont., made 39 saves in the shut out win and earned player of the game honours.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice on Saturday, November 26 as they head to Windsor, Ont., to take on the Lancers. The puck drops at 4:10 p.m.
