The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to the Concordia Stingers on Saturday, November 12 at Varsity Arena.
Despite the loss, the Blues picked up a single point to give them three out of a possible four points this weekend. The Blues record is now 5-4-2, which moves them into sixth place in the OUA East division.
Veteran forward Byron Elliott picked up a goal and an assist to bring his season total to 18 points in 11 games. Rookie forward Paul Van De Velde (Mariapolis, Man.) and Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) also scored for the Blues.
The Stingers took a two-goal lead in the first period off goals from Alexandre Monahan, and Olivier Jannard; However, Elliott got the Blues back in the game, beating Stingers goalie Nicholas Champion on a wrist shot off the rush and then spinning off a defender and driving the puck to the net to allow Van De Velde to fire it top shelf to tie the score at 2-2.
The Stingers took the lead back in the second period on a shot from Mike Stinziani that trickled past Blues goaltender Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.). Toronto battled back again, and at 14:57 of the second, Ventura snapped a shot off the post and in to tie the game again.
The Blues controlled play for most of the third period, outshooting Concordia 15-6 but they were unable to beat Champion, who made 36 saves on the night.
Then, 48 seconds into the overtime period, Michael Blundon beat Sheehan on a blast from the point to give the Stingers the win.
Sheehan made 27 saves in the loss. Paul Van De Velde was named Toronto’s player of the game.
The Blues next game is Friday, November 18 in Trois-Rivières Quebec against the UTRQ Patriotes. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
