Five different players scored as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team defeated the Queen’s Gaels 5-2 on Friday, October 7 at Varsity Arena.
The win marks Toronto's first over Queen's since Jan. 16, 2010.
After a scoreless first period, fourth-year forward Robert Kay of Orono, Ont., got the Blues on the board, tapping in a Cassidy Preston rebound that was sitting on the goal line.
Second-year forward Anthony Bergin (Scarborough, Ont.) potted U of T’s second goal on the powerplay, one-timing a Michael Markovic pass in the slot past Gaels goalie Riley Whitlock.
Less than two minutes later Tyler von Engelbrechten nudged in fellow rookie forward Paul Van De Velde’s wrap around attempt to give the Blues a 3-0 lead that they would carry into the third period.
The Gaels came out raring to go in the third and quickly got on the board as Kelly Jackson finished off a play in U of T’s crease.
Three minutes later first-year Gaels forward Corey Bureau of Amherstview, Ont., wired a shot into the top corner to close the gap to one (3-2).
U of T would add some insurance with just over three minutes remaining as third-year forward Kyle Ventura scored off a faceoff to the left of Whitlock.
Byron Elliott rounded out the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute of play.
Rookie goaltender Brett Willows made 21 saves in his CIS debut victory.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Satrurday, October 15 as they host the Westren Mustangs at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
