The Varsity Blues women's hockey team scored two third-period goals in a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 30) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 3-3-1 and sit in seventh place in the OUA standings.
Windsor’s Courtney Spoors opened the scoring 6:47 into the game, only to be answered by Toronto’s Callie Bazak less than two minutes later. The Lancers would add a short-handed tally with just over three minutes remaining and held onto a 2-1 lead after the first period.
Blues assistant captain and Scarborough, Ont., native Amanda Fawns evened the score on a Blues powerplay with 4:31 to go in the second period. U of T went 1-for-7 on the powerplay, while Windsor was unable to convert on 14 opportunities in what proved to be a penalty-filled affair.
The Blues struck early in the third period. With a delay penalty coming to Windsor, Kelly O'Hanlon won the puck battle along the boards outside the Windsor blue line to create a 2-on-1 advantage. The Markham, Ont., native then slid the puck over to Amanda Ricker who’s backhand beat Windsor goalie Julia Ouroumis for the eventual game-winner.
With 6:57 left, the Blues found themselves down two players and actually had the best scoring opprtunity when April Looije blocked a shot from the point and went in on a breakway. The rookie defenceman attempted to deke around Ouroumis but the puck went just wide of the net.
At tail end of second penalty, Ouroumis attempted to clear the puck up ice, but instead passed it right to fifth-year forward Brenley Jorgensen who put it the empty net.
Blues goaltender Nicole Kesteris made 28 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 4 as they travel to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa, Ont. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
