NO. 9 BLUES SOAR PAST RAVENS

Third-year striker Jessica Fantozzi scored two goals in leading the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22) in Ottawa.

With the win, the Blues improve to 11-1-13 and remain in second place in the OUA East division.  Toronto takes on the third-place and No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees (11-3-1) tomorrow afternoon to determine final playoff seeding.

The Blues scored the match’s first marker in the 15th minute as striker Aisha Lewis (Mississauga, Ont.) collected a ball from an Olivia Gonslaves (Scarborough, Ont.) header on her run to the net and found the far bottom corner with her shot.

The lead was doubled just eight minutes into the second half when Lewis eluded Ravens right back Jennifer Tutton (Dartmouth, N.S.) and connected with Fantozzi (West Vancouver), who made no mistake on her opportunity.

The game then saw back-and-forth action until Carleton collapsed late.

Varsity Blues striker Hattie Daumann (Vancouver) was left unmarked in the 86th minute and crossed to Eilish McConville (Ottawa) who cleanly headed the ball on her run to the net to beat the recently subbed-in Rachel Bedek (St. Thomas, Ont.).

And with just a minute to go, Fantozzi easily earned her second goal of the outing as she was allowed to get a shot off in the six-yard box.

Adrianna Ruggiero (Markham, Ont.) responded for her Ravens just a few moments after, but it was too late to mount a comeback.

Rookie goalkeeper Sara Petrucci was solid in net and earned player of the game honours for her efforts.
