BERGIN, LIUKKONEN LEAD BLUES TO VICTORY

Forwards Anthony Bergin and Tyler Liukkonen recorded three points each to lead the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team to a 5-3 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Wednesday, October 19 at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 3-1-0 on the season.

A first-year forward from Sault Ste Marie, Ont., Liukkonen scored two goals and added one assist, while sophomore Anthony Bergin (Scarborough) had one goal and two helpers in the win.

Blues leading scorer Byron Elliott opened the scoring six minutes into the contest and Bergin potted his lone goal of the game eight minutes later as Toronto built a 2-0 lead after the first period of play.

Ryerson turned things around and closed the gap with three second-period goals.  Brian Birkhoff got the visiting team on the board 39 seconds into the frame, only to be answered with a goal by third-year Blues forward Kyle Ventura.

Rams forward Greg Riggs notched a powerplay marker at the 13:25 mark of the second period and Greg Payne evened the score at 3-3 less than four minutes later.

Liukkonen then took matters into his own hands, regaining the one-goal cushion just eight seconds later for what would be the eventual game-winner.

Liukkonen added his second goal of the game midway through the third period to give the Blues a comfortable 5-3 lead that would remain until the final buzzer.

Rookie goaltender Brett Willows made 28 saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice on Friday, October 21 as they travel to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
