Two third-period goals would be the difference as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 3-2 to the Ryerson Rams on Friday, January 28 at Varsity Arena.
Third-year forward and assistant captain Byron Elliott of Burlington, Ont., tallied both of Toronto’s goals in the losing cause.
Ryerson’s Cory Konecny scored with 30 seconds to go in the third period to seal the one-goal victory.
Elliott opened the scoring while shorthanded with less than three minutes remaining in the first period. The 6-foot-1 forward turned the puck over on a Ryerson point shot and skated down to deke Paul Gibson five-hole for the breakaway goal.
Elliott notched Toronto’s second goal of the game towards the end of the second period with a marker assisted by Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) and Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.)
Ryerson answered back 31 seconds later with a goal off the stick of Matt Schmermund. Second-year forward Jesse Chadwick of Caldeon, Ont., would go on to even the score midway through the third period before Konecny put the game away in the last minute of the contest.
Blues goaltender Andrew Martin of Mississauga, Ont., made 41 saves in the losing cause.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Sunday, January 30 when they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the RMC Paladins. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
