KING SHINES FOR TRINIDAD & TOBAGO AT GOLD CUP QUALIFIERS

University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer player Arin King has played an integral role in Trinidad and Tobago’s senior national team’s drive to the women’s Gold Cup hosted by Mexico in late October.

Named a 2009 OUA all-star in her first year of intercollegiate competition with the Blues, King represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) under-20 women’s soccer championship in January 2010.

The Pickering, Ont., native, whose mother was born in Trinidad, was then called up to train with senior women’s team, who is led by ex-Canadian national women’s coach Even Pelerud.

King, who will enter her second year of studies in biological sciences this fall, scored a natural hat trick in only her second game to lead the senior national squad to a 5-0 victory over Barbados. Trinidad and Tobago went 3-0 in the second round of qualifying for the women’s Gold Cup and King was ranked among the top 10 goal scorers over the five-day tournament in May.

Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti are the Caribbean qualifiers that have advanced to the Gold Cup and have also earned a spot in the Caribbean South American Games in Puerto Rico in late July.

The winner of Cuba and Guyana will complete the eight-team women's Gold Cup field, joining North American sides Canada, Mexico and the United States, along with Central American qualifiers Costa Rica and Guatemala.
